There are better things to be doing with your mana than spend seven to kill an enchantment and be left with Storm Crow. Kithkin Spellduster is an overcosted flier with a very Limited sacrifice ability. I’d like to point out that while the rules more vaguely state “ permanent” and not “creature,” all of the cards that actively have the persist ability are creatures so far. “Persist” means “When this permanent is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner’s control with a -1/-1 counter on it.” WotC When a creature with persist dies it comes back with a -1/-1 counter unless it already had one on it.ħ02.79a Persist is a triggered ability. Persist is a mechanic for creatures that lets them come back from the graveyard, just slightly smaller. Glen Elendra Archmage | Illustration by Karl Kopinski Let’s get to the part where I tell you how it works! But a mechanic as enjoyable as persist will definitely show up again.īut I’ve talked enough about my love of the mechanic. It doesn’t show up as much these days since creatures are a lot bigger and decks are a lot faster, not to mention that a number of other cards may have been banned. Abusing the mechanic has been a significant strategy in a number of combo decks over the years where it’s a hallmark of Birthing Pod decks. Giving added value to creatures with ETB abilities is a very popular design space, which is why persist creatures have shown up in Commander and on the kitchen table since it was first printed.Įven more than just providing added value, persist is particularly interesting in the ways it interacts with +1/+1 counters among other effects. The defining mechanic in a multicolor block, persist is featured in all colors and on creatures of all sizes. Persist was introduced in 2008 with Shadowmoor. In other words, there is no point at which that creature was both on the battlefield and had no +1/+1 counters on it before it died.Kitchen Finks | Illustration by Kev Walker At that point it did have a +1/+1 counter on it, so it will not be returned to play. The undying ability uses last known information, and will look at this creature when it was in play. This means that this creature will both have the counter removed from it and go to the graveyard simultaneously. ![]() This is because all state-based actions are checked at once. But if an undying creature has a +1/+1 counter and receives any number of -1/-1 counter that lower its toughness to zero or cause the creature to now have lethal damage marked on it, then this creature will not be returned to play. When a creature has both a +1/+1 and a -1/-1 counter on it, both will be removed when state-based actions are checked. Similarly, if a permanent that is not normally a creature becomes one and gains undying, it will return with a counter even though it’s not a creature at that time.īecause token creatures cease to exist when they leave the battlefield, undying can never bring them back to play.Īs mentioned above, the undying ability will only trigger if an undying creature leaves play without any +1/+1 counters on it. If an undying creature stops being a creature, the undying ability will still return it to play. Undying only appears on creature cards, but the ability itself will work with any permanent type. If you gain control of an undying creature owned by an opponent, when it dies and returns to play it will not return to play under your control. Undying returns the creature to play under its owner’s control. In most cases this is pretty straightforward, but there can be a few confusing situations that may arise. A creature with undying will be returned to play with a +1/+1 counter on it after it dies, as long as it did not have a +1/+1 counter on it when it went to the graveyard. Undying is the keyword mechanic equivalent of just that. A common theme in the horror genre is of a monster that was just defeated coming back stronger than ever. ![]()
